Slide 9 Conclusion
I have asked to shadow the counselors in each school so I can get a feel for the different age groups. It has been a dream of mine to become a school counselor for ten years but since I have two small children, I am unsure when I will be able to pursue and obtain a Master's degree. In the mean time I plan to be involved in the school as much as possible. I have already joined the PTA and hope to become a Mental Health First Aid instructor. Any and all parent and family education opportunities that come my way will be explored so that I can better serve my community. I know that interning as a school counselor is where I am meant to be because it will open up doors that will better allow me to build up the Kingdom of God.
This job is very applicable to my degree because school counselors provide emotional and educational support and encouragement and actively look for ways to improve the lives of the children and families. My responsibilities in this position will include:
-Family contact for 504 meeting/ paperwork
-Assisting school counselors in lessons/ groups and shadowing
-Potential lessons include but are not limited to bullying prevention, emotional regulation and overall health and well-being
-Preparing students for college and/or future careers (like marriage and family)
- 1-1 sessions/crisis
-Assist with conflict resolution and peer mediation
-Help students develop study skills, time management, and goal-setting strategies
-Participating in school staff meetings
-Collect and analyze data
-Assist in planning events like career fairs, parent workshops, or college nights
-Shadowing principals
I look forward to applying the skills I have learned in my degree which include but are not limited to:
-Awareness
-Moral humility
-Bilingual advocacy
-Empathy
-Critical thinking
-Problem solving
-Assertion
