Social Innovation W7
Boys & Girls Clubs of America had its beginnings in 1860 with four women in Hartford, Connecticut – Mary Goodwin, Alice Goodwin, Elizabeth Hammersley and Louisa Bushnell. Believing that boys who roamed the streets should have a positive alternative, they organized the first Club. With character development as the cornerstone of the experience, the Club focused on capturing boys interests, improving their behavior and increasing their personal expectations and goals.
Youth unemployment and underemployment are significant issues that affect the future prospects of young individuals. Organizations like the Boys and Girls Club of America work to equip youth with skills and opportunities that help bridge this gap, providing them with the tools necessary to succeed in the workforce
Access to quality education remains a barrier for many young people in underserved communities. The Boys and Girls Club initiatives focus on academic support and mentorship, ensuring that youth have the resources needed to excel in their education, which is crucial for their personal and professional development
Community violence and safety concerns pose significant threats to youth development. By fostering safe environments and providing conflict resolution programs, organizations like the Boys and Girls Club strive to minimize these risks and enhance the overall safety of communities for young people.
