W11 Family Dynamics

  • Not accepting outside help puts you in the closed family dynamic.
  • Explicit rule is spoken. Implicit rules are not talked about.
*Always talk about homeostasis when talking about feedback loops.
*Homeostasis means that there is equilibrium but having equilibrium does not mean that there is homeostasis.

>Critique of the Systems theory is that it is more of a model or flow chart than a theory.
>Entropy is anything going from order to disorder. Goes into the random category. Takes a lot of energy to be in this category.

  • The feedback loop is a stimulus to morphogenesis
  • Role congruent and incongruent has to do with personal identity
  • consensus and disconsensus has to do with a group
*Salience is important. Salience is a state or condition of being prominent. What is most important to us now.
    >The roles that are most important make up our identity
*Impression management: the front stage puts our best self out there. The backstage figures it all out.

>"me" is acting in a behavior that your audience would expect.
>playstage = 1 role at a time
>gamestage = takes on multiple roles at a time

  • critiques of symbolic interactionism:
    • they are difficult to define and test
    • does not have the basic set of assumptions
    • does not give enough attention to emotions and the role of the unconscious
    • lack of attention to the role of biology
    • we live in a world that we do not create ourselves
