Chpt 13 Research Methods
Preparing and sharing the results of psychological science is more difficult than sharing the gospel. I did appreciate Dallin H. Oak's advice on how we can commit Type 1 errors when sharing the gospel. He reminded us that "We must be sure we act out of love and not in any attempt to gain personal recognition or advantage. The warning against those who use Church position to gratify their pride or vain ambition (see D&C 121:37) surely applies to our efforts to share the gospel." It is easy to reject the null hypothesis when our intentions are 40% love and 60% selfish. I can relate to Elder Oaks. It is hard to sacrifice my time for someone or something if it is not convenient for me at least a little. I know that it is impossible to do our ministering without making things at least slightly convenient but thanks to this talk, I now know the danger in choosing convenience over love. Love is sacrifice and sacrifice is only worth it with the right mindset. That mindset is definitely easier to retain with God's help, which is easier said than done. So, while preparing and sharing the results of psychological science is more difficult than sharing the gospel. It is still difficult to share the gospel.
