W8 Child & Family Advocacy

"....how we disagree is a real measure of who we are and whether we truly follow the Savior. It is appropriate to disagree, but it is not appropriate to be disagreeable. Violence and vandalism are not the answer to our disagreements. If we show love and respect even in adverse circumstances, we become more like Christ” (We Follow Jesus Christ

  • Search the scriptures to find a few examples of how the word “persuasion” is used. Write down what you find
Neil L. Anderson: "Peacemakers are not passive; they are persuasive in the Savior's way."
D&C 121: 34-43
  • Write down a few other synonyms for persuade the scriptures use
convince, exhort, plead, urge
  • Is it possible to persuade someone to do or believe the wrong thing but in the right way? How so?
  • Is it possible to persuade someone to do or believe the right thing but in the wrong way? How so?
  • When was the last time you tried to persuade someone to do or believe something? What was your approach?
If emotions drive our decisions, and logic rationalizes that decision after, then this info gives new meaning to "trust your gut". If you are constantly trying to justify your actions then you are not trusting your gut (aka. you conscience or the holy spirit).

When we hear stories our whole brain is activated unlike when we hear statistics.

....one of the most pressing challenges of our time: how to separate the stories that heal or protect, from those that divide and destroy. (Kenneth E. Miller Ph.D)

When you tell a story your brain syncs with others and you feel what they feel....For as long as you've got your audience's attention, they are in your mind. (Joshua Gowin Ph.D.)

  • How do you think you can use stories effectively without losing the meat of your message?
  • How do narratives stem from some of the moral foundations?
  • What was most meaningful to you while learning about being a persuasive, articulate family advocate?
reframing issues = global warming say global climate change instead of tax cut say tax relief.
  • What are your thoughts and/or reactions to Marcia’s mini-speech given at Harvard?

How to win an argument = tell a story

So, a spoon full of story helps the research go down...in the most delightful way.

D&C 6:23 23 Did I not speak peace to your mind concerning the matter? What greater witness can you have than from God?

To assume that you have the moral high ground places yourself above others and Christ did not do that. He had the moral high ground but chose to place himself beneath others, literally at their feet. Getting on the same level as others allows you to help them.

Jonathan Haidt: When you talk to people that disagree with you, they actually know things that you don't know. When you talk to people that agree with you, you don't learn very much.
...liberitarians are generally male and libertarian females are normally more masculine.
....a masculine female can just mean they are higher systemizing and lower empathazing (more rational)
....moral humility= realizing that as individuals we are not all that smart on our own.
....a little more epistimalogical humility from all of us would make our democracy work a little better.

they both spoke with conviction, even though they were wrong.
  • What was the basis or the premise for each speaker’s stance?
Religious premise for the first speaker. The second speaker's premise was that because his parents sexual orientation didn't effect his own character and since he turned out well then more individuals could be raised by same sex parents without there being any side effects.

  • Did either of the speakers speak to the elephant or just the rider? How so?
Just the elephant
  • Was there any story of self, us, or now in either of the policy speeches?
  • If you were on the fence when it comes to the public policy definition of marriage, how might you feel after listening to both speeches?
The second speech was good at using emotion and the self, us, now narrative.
I find it interesting that Christ never really spoke too much of hellfire and damnation except to those that were abusing the temple or being hypocritical. Even then, Christ was a better spokesman then the first speaker. The second was very convincing but he still commited a few logical fallacies.
