W4 Child & Family Advocacy

*A mesosystem is a system of microsystems and the relationships that connect and surround each microsystem.

*Macrosystem = SES, culture, etc.

*Chronosystem = life transitions and historical events

>Julie felt that the Exosystem was the most important because they are the factors that you cannot control so they should be the ones that we are paying the most attention to.

You'll probably start to see how even people in the same family can have very different beliefs.

  1. What is your sex?
  2. What is your age?
  3. What are your scores (out of 100) for all Big 5 Personality traits?
  4. How many brothers and sisters in your family? Where do you fit (birth order)?
  5. Are your parents divorced or married? If divorced, how old were you?
  6. What is the quality of your relationship with your mom and your dad?
  7. Did you grow up studying the scriptures and praying on a regular basis?
  8. What was your family’s socioeconomic status (lower, middle, upper class)?
  9. Did you experience any traumatic events in your first 20 years of life?
  10. What kind of neighborhood did you grow up in?
  11. Were your parents liberal, conservative, or something else?
  12. What state and city did you grow up in?
  13. When were you baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?
  14. How long have you been active in the church?
  15. What kind of school did you attend (public, private, home, etc.)?
  16. What kind of friends did you have during your teen years?
  17. How old were you when you received your first smartphone?
  18. Did you have any ward or stake leaders growing up that had a significant impact on your life?
  19. What was the predominant political party in the area in which you grew up?
  20. Were you raised in an area of the world with a culture that was focused more on ethic of autonomy, community, or divinity...or all three?

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” –Isaiah 5:20Links to an external site.

  • Does this scripture mean that we can socialize an individual—particularly a child—to believe dark is light?
  • Pick any social issue in the sliders above. If it were promoted or normalized at every level (see below), how might it look?

  • How might understanding how people develop within multiple contexts give you more compassion and understanding of those who are promoting ideas that are hurtful to men, women, and children?
  • Where does social media fit into this model? The Ecological approach was defined and published long before social media, so in which system do you see it having the biggest impact?
  • Of the different areas of advocacy above, which are you weakest? Strongest? Are you accurately assessing your current and future abilities?
  • Finally, is there a danger in understanding child development and healthy family dynamics (micro) without understanding the broader impact of policy, law, and culture? In other words, might your advocacy efforts be less effective if all you understand is social science and know nothing of political science or vice versa?

  • Did our culture create a need for porn, or is porn shaping our culture?
  • Is transgenderism a social construct (nurture) or biological function (nature)? Has it always existed? Does it even matter where it came from and what systems are involved?
  • Do violent video games socialize children and teens to be more aggressive, or do naturally aggressive youth seek after violent video games?
  • Is racism today created or reported by the media and how does that impact the way we think about it?
  • Do you agree with the author's premise and conclusions? Why or why not?
  • Is this good for children, families, and society? Why or why not?
  • What historical events and factors (chronosystem) can you think of that have contributed to this movement?
  • What social, cultural, and political (macrosystem) can you think of that have contributed to this movement?
  • What moral foundations are typically employed by those who are in favor of normalizing transgenderism?
  • What moral foundations are typically employed by those who are against normalizing what is called "gender dysphoria"?
>Non-Binary is someone who feels they are a third gender because they are neither male or female, neither heterosexual or homosexual. This is increasing to 10% of population.

D&C 52:14Links to an external site. when He declared,

"And again, I will give unto you a pattern in all things, that ye may not be deceived; for Satan is abroad in the land, and he goeth forth deceiving the nations—"

Brother Petermann: Note that Christ's pattern exposes the deceptions of Satan and helps us to see truth more clearly. Also important to note is that Christ and Satan both have their patterns, and if you want to learn doubly, seek to understand the pattern of light in all things and you will naturally start to see the opposite pattern of darkness in all things. You might add that Satan goes for deceiving the nations with his own pattern. In other words, if God has a pattern, you better believe that Satan will create a similar, toxic version of it.

If the family is truly the fundamental unit of society because that is where selflessness is learned; and truth is objective and unchangeable in God's pattern, then what might be Satan's counterfeit version?

Perhaps it could be that each "man [and woman] prospers according to the management of the creature" (individualism) and that whatsover a person doeth is no crime" (moral relativism)

  • What events in the chronosystem have brought this about?
  • How have beliefs and ideas of the overarching culture in the macrosystem in the U.S. perpetuated fatherlessness?
  • What entities and structures in the exosystem perpetuate fatherlessness?
  • What is taking place in the mesosystem and microsystem that have contributed to this massive change in a relatively short period of time?
"Children are entitled to birth within the bonds of matrimony, and to be reared by a father and a mother who honor marital vows with complete fidelity"? When we advocate for a healthy marriage and family culture, we are essentially advocating for the rights of children.
