W1 Public Speaking

 Exploring Public Speaking:

  • Aristotle said that if a man was expected to defend himself physically, he shouldalso be able to defend his ideas rhetorically, that is, through persuasive public speakissseseedetermine how you would explain your own ethical standard for communication (what and why)
.ethics used to be called rhetoric

I did not realize that there were so many different ways to plagiarize so that is definitely one of the key concepts that will stick with me. Another key concept that stood out to me was to respect your audience's time. I had never really thought about the amount of time you put into preparing a speech as being representative of how much you value your audience, so I will have to work on that one because I do not want to be considered disrespectful for going over time. Furthermore, I did not know that there were different types of credibility. It makes sense that we want our speaker to be credible, especially in today's society with all of the false information that is out there. I definitely feel annoyed and cheated when I have read something that I later find out was not credible information. Ethics and public speaking really makes a lot of sense because most audiences naturally assume that the objectives of public speakers are honorable and no one really wants to waste their time these days, so there are a lot of expectations when it comes to public speaking that I had never really considered until now.
