Public Speaking W2

Johann Goethe said, (paraphrased) If we understood how complex communication is , we probably would not attempt it. Another translation said: No one would talk much in society if they knew how often they misunderstood others.

Communication is a process, not a singular event. (textbook)

Denotative is a commonly shared meaning and connotative is a individual, cultural meaning.

 >We are capable of processing words more quickly than anyone can speak clearly, which is one of the reasons listening is difficult (Foulke, 1968).

  • How would you describe public speaking? Why is public speaking valuable?
It encourages you to voice your ideas and take advantage of the influence you have. (Massengale, 2014)

  • What is glossophobia? What steps can be taken to manage this fear?
  • What are the Four Standard Methods of Speech Delivery? How are they different and what are their strengths and weaknesses?
  • How should you prepare for a speech?
create an outline. The outline helps you be flexible (add delete) and makes you aware of main ideas vs. subordinate ones (textbook)
time the speech
stretch
eat healthy
good nights rest
wear something flattering
  • Name five things to do when delivering your speech.
  • What are five things that you should consider when presenting a speech online?

-Use the 10-20-30 rule for slides. No more than 10 slides, no more than 20 words, and no smaller than 30 points.
-find a way to use humor
-Put a bright light behind the camera
When this class is over, what specific skills do you want to develop as a communicator?

What behavior done by public speakers “drives you nuts,” that is, creates “noise” for you in listening to them?
when someone says um way too many times or apologizes too much.
