Week 11 Andvanced English

"I write pieces, and move them around. And the fun of it is watching the truthful parts slide together. What is false won't fit."

Elizabeth Strout

"The great enemy of clear language is insincerity. When there is a gap between one's real and one's declared aims, one turns instinctively to long words and exhausted idioms, like a cuttlefish squirting out ink."
George Orwell

GOALS:

  • Robert McKee said, "If you had something to say, you couldn’t stop yourself from writing. You can’t kill your talent, but you can starve it into a coma through ignorance. For no matter how talented, the ignorant cannot write. Talent must be stimulated by facts and ideas. Do research. Feed your talent."
  • How does research feed your talent?
  • How can research help you find something to say?

  • A passage from A.A. Milne emphasizes the importance of organization: “Organizing is what you do before you do something, so that when you do it, it is not all mixed up.”
  • Organizing an argument and grappling with several sources is challenging. How has organizing your notes deepened your understanding of your research issue?
  • How does organizing your ideas help you avoid getting “all mixed up”?
