Week 4:
Effective Choices, Not Longer Days:
Success is not necessarily about working hard, it's about making the right choices.
Sharon Mays: Either do it or stop talking about it......Find what your dream is and give it life.
Launching Leaders:
How Will You Measure Your Life?
One of the theories that gives great insight on the first question—how to be sure we find happiness in our careers—is from Frederick Herzberg, who asserts that the powerful motivator in our lives isn’t money; it’s the opportunity to learn, grow in responsibilities, contribute to others, and be recognized for achievements.....
Management is the most noble of professions if it’s practiced well. No other occupation offers as many ways to help others learn and grow, take responsibility and be recognized for achievement, and contribute to the success of a team.
- Create Strategy for Your Life
- Allocate Your Resources
- Create a Culture
- Avoid the “Marginal Costs” Mistake
- Remember the Importance of Humility
- Choose the Right Yardstick: I’ve concluded that the metric by which God will assess my life isn’t dollars but the individual people whose lives I’ve touched.
Effective Choices, Not Longer Days:
Success is not necessarily about working hard, it's about making the right choices.

Deconstructing Your Fears:
If you pursue your calling with discipline, intentionality, and the help of fellow travelers, what are the chances that your worst case scenario will really happen?
As you look at your list of fears, what themes emerge? What is at the core of what you really fear? Financial ruin? The judgment or disapproval of others? Physical harm? Endangering the ones you love? Embarrassment?
What is the risk of taking no action – not following your calling? How do you plan to deal with fear when it pops up on your entrepreneurial journey?
Launching Leaders:
- The Tri-Quation= Self Esteem, Productivity, Event Control
- The Productivity Pyramid= Daily Tasks, Short Term Goals, Long Term Goals, Governing Values
- Personal Constitution
*Perform tasks that reflect who you want to become. That's taking control of your life.
*Prioritize your values in order of importance.
*...the key to happiness is taking control of our lives by consciously aligning ourselves with God
*The only constant in life is God.
The Cycle of Spiritual Guidance
a. Discover your true identity
b. Trust your inner voice
c. Have faith to act right away
d. Be at peace with Heaven's timing
e. Live well
f. Repeat through out your life
- a. ..one of the best ways to develop...deep-seated knowledge is to regularly set aside some time to pray, meditate, ponder, and reflect.
- a. As long as you're building on a strong relationship with God and the conviction that you are His child, you will eventually uncover the person you were meant to be.
- b. learning to understand our emotions is a critical part of bringing our lives into alignment with God's will.
- b. Learning to discern God's voice, and being able to differentiate that voice from your own desires, takes time and intentionality.
- c. The more you learn to recognize the influence of God's Holy Spirit, the more important it will be for you to follow through on what God is telling you....right away, without delaying, is an act of faith that demonstrates that you are in the game, that you have decided that standing on the sidelines is no longer enough.
- c. When you trust your inner voice enough to act on God's guidance...allows Him to have an even greater hand in your life.
- c. Acting right away does not mean you act thoughtlessly...
- d. Being at peace with Heaven's timing pushes us to subsume our wishes and plans to the greater wisdom of God. It is an exercise in faith and humility.
- d. ...find yourself waiting for anything to come of your actions...try changing your perspective so that you're focusing more on what you might be able to learn from that period of waiting.
- d. Part of trying to live according to God's timing is understanding that there are no coincidences. What might look like a random run-in with a new acquaintance or an inconsequential discovery of a book may in fact be a pivotal moment in the much larger timeframe of God. Maybe you reading this book at this precise moment in your life is one such "coincidence."
- d. Keeping a journal= sharpened ability to communicate.
- e. The more you strive to live your daily life in accordance with the teachings of God's word, the more you bring yourself into alignment with Him.
- f. ...each step of the cycle naturally feeds into the next.
Chapter 2
- ...there will always be a gap between where you're at right now and where you hope to be in the future.
- ...Figuring out how to bridge that gap is a huge part of what life is all about.
- Your Core Values will help you make difficult life decisions, and will also give you a clear set of criteria with which you can hold yourself accountable and gauge how well you're progressing toward your most important goals.
Finding your Core Values:
a. Find holy ground
b. Ponder
c. Write Core Value Statements
d. Rank your Core Values
e. Do your Core Values align with God?
- b. Learning to be honest with yourself, especially about the hard things, is a powerful tool that will enable you to grow and transform in incredible ways. If you are honest with yourself in this step, there will always be a gap between the person you are right now and the person you want to become in the future...recognizing this gap will help you identify what it is you truly value, what your deepest desires are, where your greatest hopes lie, and what you need to do to make them a reality.
- e. ...return to your holy ground and ask God if what you've come up with matches what He wants for your life. Pay attention to your inner voice and look for the presence of the Holy Spirit to confirm...
- Even when you stumble, if you keep your sights fixed on progressing you will begin building a life of peace and purpose.
- ...the process of becoming cannot be achieved alone...
- ...find joy in the process of change. This will help you LOVE the person you've already become as well as the person you're still in the process of becoming.
Chapter 3
- By filling your life with good friends and mentors, your journey through life will never be lonely, and you will find yourself empowered to become more successful than you ever could all on your own. Along the way, you'll also become a friend and a mentor to others...
- ...no individual person succeeds all on their own.
- Mentors are essentially life friends that we trust deeply, and who share guidance, insight, and wisdom that helps us bridge the gap between where we're at today and where we hope to be in the future.
- ...we consider any source of goodness and wisdom that helps us figure life out just a little bit better to be a mentor. And of course, we should all strive to let God be our most important mentor.
- ...as you begin sharing your dreams with them (mentor), you will feel a rush of relief. It will feel like a parachute has finally opened and for the first time ever you can look around and enjoy the incredible view.
*Bad company corrupts good character.
How to Find Great Mentors:
- "Frame" your future.
- Look for a believer
- Be observant
- Be mindful of God's hand.
- Be bold...ask that person outright if they would become your mentor.
- Be careful
- Be a good candidate...Treat the process of finding a mentor kind of like a job interview, and focus on communicating openly and directly with the person you've asked to mentor you.
- Show gratitude....take time to give back. Create a give-and-take friendship.
God is The Best Mentor of All
- "my yoke is easy and my burden is light." One of many helpful ways to interpret this teaching is to read it as a powerful lesson about mentors. Traditionally, a yoke was used to harness together two or more large animals like horses or oxen, and would allow them to work together to pull heavy wagons or plows. A yoke is a powerful image of what can be achieved when people work together to accomplish more than they could have on their own.
*Allow Him to become your mentor.
*One plus God is always enough.
- Sometimes allowing yourself to be mentored by God means that He will call you to carry out certain tasks or fill certain roles that might be outside your comfort zone.
- By temporarily separating from the world, Moses was able to access powerfully clear and direct counsel from God...After Moses had demonstrated his faithfulness, God lifted him to entirely new heights of capability and possibility. Like Moses, allowing God to become your greatest mentor will allow you to separate from the distractions of the world so you can be "called up" to achieve greater levels of joy, peace, and success then ever before. Getting there requires that you fully commit to walking whatever paths God points you toward.
*...consider the types of mentors you need in order to meet your goals and aspirations.
Chapter 4
Charting a successful course through life means that you let God become both your instructor and your co-pilot.
PHASE 1: Create Alignment; Envision Your Destination
PHASE 2: Chart Your Course
PHASE 3: Fly the Course
Chapter 5
Learning and living The Formula won't always be easy; it will require steady commitment, effort, and time. But the rewards are well worth it.
The most fulfilling aspect of life is serving others and giving back. The whole point of The Formula is to put you in a position where you can dedicate yourself to serving others and making the world a better place.
Chapter 6
A person leads a double life any time they compromise their morals or fail to live with full integrity.
Signs you're living a double life:
Secrets
Gray is acceptable
Inappropriate relationships
Infidelity
Rationalizations
Misrepresenting yourself
*Know when to seek help. The key to getting yourself out of a double life is knowing when you're in trouble.
SUMMARY
I am not content with where I am at in my journey but I am confident that I will get to where I want to be.
"severe turbulence" typically means "momentary loss of control." It's unfortunate that I will have moments where I lose control or am pushed off the path but I am still confident in my path. This class has equipped me with the correct tools to not only be a good entrepreneur but great family member, citizen, and disciple of Jesus Christ.
